Campgrounds Less Traveled
We've been called the World's Youngest Snowbirds.
Like piracy, our travel plans are more like guidelines.
We put the "no" in nomad.
Something you find out when you hit the road is that everyone has their own travel style. Some people zig-zag across the country whenever the notion strikes.
Some people change where home is every week, maybe even twice a week. Some people have things planned out months ahead of time.
Mr. G and I, we are definitely not those people.
When we moved into the bus we had GRAND plans. If we were on track with those grand plans, we’d be just outside of Portland right now, winding down after an incredible summer in Alaska.
Spoiler Alert: This old bus is yet to make it west of the Mississippi.
What we thought we would do, and what we’ve done have been two completely different things. Surprisingly though, we’re actually really happy with that reality.
Maybe it’s our laid-back lifestyle. Maybe it’s because we’re hella-cheap when it comes to picking campgrounds.
Maybe it’s because, while we want to meet everyone and experience everything, we enjoy quiet and downtime.
While we have a huge amount of respect for all you weekend warriors and recreational adventurers out there, we definitely don’t identify as campers. Nary a weenie roast or campfire sing along has been had since we moved into the bus.
Contrary to Instagram beliefs, our entire life isn’t a vacation. We do all the same things people do in their sticks and bricks houses. The only difference is our house occasionally moves.
We stay an average of two months at each campground, and we never stay anywhere for less than two weeks.
We tend to pick central locations to lots of things we want to see, and then spend all that time immersing ourselves in a new region.
If you’re a fan of manicured lawns, well-paved sites, and modern amenities, the places Mr. G and I stay might not be your cup of tea.
Our favorite campgrounds are pretty rustic, and our favorite neighbors are never boring.
What we can guarantee though, is that we’ll recommend places that are clean, safe, low-key, and quiet.
All of that said, we’ve called some weird and wonderful places home during our time in the bus. Check out some of our favorites below.
